Thyroid Health
Thyroid Health
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck with a significant role: it governs your basal metabolic rate, and in turn influences energy, weight, mood, temperature regulation, heart rate, digestion, and reproductive health. When thyroid function is out of balance, this can affect almost every system in the body.
As a Perth Naturopath and Herbalist, thyroid disorders are among the most common conditions that I work with, and also among the most commonly missed or delayed in diagnosis. Many people live with unaddressed thyroid dysfunction for years, often because standard testing doesn’t provide insight into the full picture.
It’s a frustratingly common pattern: symptoms are dismissed as stress, ageing, or attributed to depression or anxiety. If this sounds familiar, you’re far from alone, and there is a more thorough way to investigate what’s going on.
Areas of Thyroid Health that I Support
- Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
- Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
- Sub-clinical thyroid disorders
- Autoimmune thyroid disorders, including Grave’s disease and Hashimoto’s disease
Understanding Comprehensive Thyroid Testing
Standard thyroid testing typically assesses only TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), a measure of how strongly the pituitary gland is signalling the thyroid to produce hormones. It doesn’t directly measure is the actual level of active, usable thyroid hormone circulating in your body.
This is an important gap. A comprehensive thyroid assessment looks beyond TSH to build a better picture of how your thyroid is actually functioning, not just how hard your pituitary is working to stimulate it.
Thyroid hormone production also depends on an adequate supply of specific nutrients. Without these building blocks in sufficient quantity, the thyroid doesn’t have what it needs to manufacture hormone efficiently, regardless of how well the gland itself is functioning. Identifying and correcting these nutritional gaps is often a key part of restoring healthy thyroid function.
A Naturopathic Approach to Thyroid Health
Supporting the thyroid naturopathically typically starts with a health history, and pathology testing, when appropriate, to understand your individual picture. From there, a personalised plan may include:
- Nutritional medicine: supplying the specific nutrients required as building blocks for healthy thyroid hormone production
- Herbal medicine: traditionally used to support thyroid and adrenal function
- Gut health support: given the close relationship between gut health and thyroid function (see our Digestion and Gut Health page)
- Lifestyle medicine: addressing stress and sleep, both of which significantly influence thyroid health
Naturopathic care is intended to work alongside your GP or endocrinologist, supporting overall immune balance alongside your prescribed medical management, if relevant.
