Fatigue and Low Energy
Fatigue and Low Energy
Persistent fatigue is one of the most common reasons people seek out a naturopath, and one of the most frustrating symptoms to live with, particularly when standard blood tests come back ‘normal’ and you’re still feeling exhausted. Fatigue is a symptom with many possible underlying causes, and getting to the cause of it usually requires looking well beyond a single test result.
Some Areas of Health that I Support
- Chronic fatigue
- Low energy and general lack of vitality
- Post-viral fatigue
- Stress-related fatigue
- Poor sleep contributing to daytime fatigue
What Can Contribute to Fatigue
Fatigue is rarely explained by one isolated factor. Some of the areas commonly investigated include:
- Thyroid function: both an underactive and overactive thyroid conditions can present as fatigue (see our Thyroid Health page)
- Nutrient status: low iron and other nutrients are contributors to low energy
- Adrenal and stress physiology: chronic stress places ongoing demands on the body’s stress-response systems, which can contribute to low energy
- Sleep quality: not just sleep duration, but how restorative that sleep is
- Gut health: poor nutrient absorption, dysbiosis, and gut inflammation can all impact energy levels (see our Digestion and Gut Health page)
- Blood sugar regulation: energy crashes and fatigue are often linked to blood sugar fluctuations
- Post-viral recovery: fatigue that persists after a viral illness is increasingly recognised in chronic fatigue
- Mood and mental health: fatigue and low mood frequently overlap (see our Mental Health and Wellbeing page)
A Naturopathic Approach to Fatigue
Given how many systems can contribute to fatigue, a thorough case history and, where appropriate, pathology testing are the starting point. From there, a personalised plan may include:
- Nutritional medicine: correcting deficiencies that are limiting your energy production
- Herbal medicine: traditionally used to support energy, resilience and a healthy stress response
- Gut health support: where poor absorption or gut inflammation is a contributing factor
- Sleep support: improving both sleep quality and duration
- Lifestyle medicine: stress management, and sustainable movement where appropriate
When to See Your GP First
Persistent, unexplained fatigue should always be assessed by your GP first, to rule out underlying medical causes that require specific medical management. Naturopathic support works well alongside this, once serious causes have been excluded, or are being appropriately managed.
