Skin Health
Skin Health
Skin is often described as the mirror of our internal health, and there’s real merit behind that idea. Chronic or recurring skin conditions are frequently linked to underlying factors such as hormone imbalance, gut health, inflammation, nutrient status, and immune function, which is why a naturopathic approach looks beyond the skin itself to what may be influencing skin conditions.
Some of the Skin Conditions that I Support
- Acne
- Eczema (dermatitis)
- Rosacea
- Fungal skin infections
- Psoriasis
Understanding What Is Causing Your Skin Condition
Skin concerns rarely have a single cause, and the same condition can look identical on the surface while having very different underlying drivers from person to person. Some of the areas commonly explored include:
- Hormonal factors: particularly relevant for acne, which is often linked to hormone levels, insulin sensitivity, and the menstrual cycle (see our Women’s Health page)
- Gut health: a growing body of research points to a gut-skin connection, with gut bacterial balance implicated in inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea (see our Digestion and Gut Health page)
- Food sensitivities and intolerances: which can be a trigger or aggravating factor for some skin conditions in certain individuals
- Inflammation: chronic low-grade inflammation is a common thread across many skin conditions
- Nutrient status: several nutrients play a role in skin integrity and immune regulation
- Stress: the skin and nervous system are closely linked, and stress can be a genuine trigger or flare factor for conditions like eczema, rosacea and acne
A Naturopathic Approach to Skin Health
Rather than treating the skin in isolation, treatment typically begins with a thorough case history to identify likely contributing factors, with functional or other pathology testing used, where appropriate. From there, a personalised plan may include:
- Nutritional medicine: correcting relevant deficiencies and supporting skin-relevant nutrients
- Herbal medicine: traditionally used to support hormone balance, reduce inflammation, and support skin healing
- Gut health support: addressing dysbiosis or gut inflammation where relevant
- Dietary guidance: identifying and managing food triggers where appropriate
- Lifestyle medicine: stress management and sleep support, given their role in skin flares
